LLS Commits $1 Million to Blood Cancer Patients Impacted by Hurricane Harvey

Rye Brook, NY – September 5, 2017 – In the wake of the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) announced today that it will donate up to $1 million to help blood cancer patients who have been impacted by the storm.

Blood cancer patients living in declared disaster areas impacted by Hurricane Harvey, are eligible to receive $500 to help with cancer-related necessities such as transportation to treatment, lost or damaged medications and other needs directly related to the hurricane.

“Living with a blood cancer is difficult enough without the added stress of being displaced from your home or being unable to receive treatment because of a natural disaster,” said Louis J. DeGennaro, Ph.D., president and CEO of LLS. “As a ‘patients first’ organization we are determined to provide critical support directly to those who need it. Patients’ lives literally depend on it.”

Blood cancer patients or their caregivers should visit www.lls.org/hurricane-harvey-relief to access the application form.

“LLS has been serving the Gulf Coast area of Texas for more than 30 years and we continue to support blood cancer patients and their families during this extremely difficult time,” said Billie Sue Parris, executive director of LLS Texas Gulf Coast Chapter. “This community has always supported LLS, walking in Light The Night, running with Team In Training and volunteering in so many ways to support cancer patients. Now it’s our turn to show that LLS is here for our community.”

Beyond the disaster relief program, LLS provides a wide range of free resources, education and support for all blood cancer patients, survivors and families across the country; this includes co-pay assistance and other programs to help ensure access to quality, affordable and coordinated care. Details can be found at www.lls.org or by calling LLS’s Information Specialists at (800) 955-4572.
